Quando suona il gong: La fantomatica Agenzia Pesi Massimi si rivolge al detective privato Andrea Doria per chiedergli di riaprire il caso dell'omicidio di Oscar Ringo Bonavena, pugile argentino ucciso all'alba del 22 maggio 1976 davanti al Mustang Ranch, il più rinomato bordello di Reno, nel Nevada. I fatti sono stati accertati da una regolare giuria e c'è anche un colpevole, reo confesso ed assolto per legittima difesa. Non tutti i pezzi del mosaico, però, sembrano collimare. Il romanzo si apre dunque con un classico cold case, un caso freddo ed archiviato che si vuole rispolverare dopo trentaquattro anni. Ma l'investigatore Doria, oramai avanti con l'età, sin da quasi subito cerca l'aiuto del collega Bob Orango per la risoluzione di un mistero che, soprattutto nella parte prettamente processuale, ricca com'è di sporchi personaggi sopra le righe, sembra fare il verso ai più spietati noir di James Ellroy. Il genere letterario caro agli autori è invece quello dell'hard-boiled, è quello dei duri dal cuore tenero, anche se il linguaggio ironico, che irride la sintassi in un trionfo di giochi di parole, viene indubbiamente arricchito da una verve umoristica che ha nel calembour francese la propria origine.
