La liberazione, da desideri, immaginazioni, timori (soprattutto degli dèi e della morte), culmina nella felicità. Per raggiungere questo fine, mezzo primario è la conoscenza della natura. Essa è il tutto infinito e consta solo di atomi e di vuoto; gli atomi si muovono incessantemente per due soli generi di movimento: costruttivo e distruttivo. Nel poema di Lucrezio la natura, non ha una finalità antropocentrica e la condizione umana è sentita come drammatica, non tragica, perché aperta a esiti diversi.
